Dear discouraged one

Dear Discouraged One,

I see you, sitting there feeling like you’ve lost your way. I see the way you sigh when it’s time to face your obligations for the day, wishing you could just crawl back under the covers. I see the way your shoulders droop as the weight they carry gets heavier and heavier. I know this–this sense of disillusionment, of not-quite-ness–isn’t what you hoped for when you set out.

Then again, is life ever really what we hoped for?

I know you feel discouraged. But I also know that this will be just a small part of the story you’ll tell one day. You’ll acknowledge that you felt lost and confused, but then you’ll move on to the big reveal–the moment you took the next step and found what was waiting for you on the other side of the hill. I think everyone gets there, eventually, if they’re patient and willing to push through. You are no exception.

This too shall pass. You might have to dance to a different tune to get there, but you will get there.

In the meantime, try not to give in to the negative thoughts that crowd at the edges of your mind. They aren’t telling you the truth. You are enough. Hold onto that, because it’s truth and it matters.

You are enough.

You are strong.

You are creative.

You are loved.

You matter.

It’s OK to be discouraged. It’s OK to be frustrated. But it’s not OK to believe the lies that tell you to pack it in. Never, ever give up–the moment you do is the moment you lose, and not one second before.

Carry on, brave one.
